Automated Text Messages (Tasker)

Share This:

taskerI wrote a blog awhile back about Tasker which is an Android App that turns your smart phone into a genius phone. It can really make life a lot easier and really shows how Android is much more superior then iDevices.

There’s lots of documentations online with some incredible things you can do with Tasker. And in my past blog I pretty much wrote about automating different hardware functionality with tasker. Like starting up a music app automatically when you plug your headphones in. Start a credit card app when you plug your credit card swiper in. Change power settings when battery is below a certain percentage and more. This post is more for sending text messages using Tasker.

GPS

Scenario 1: You have a very busy day that involves stopping at locations and sending a quick text message confirming your at a location.

  • Press the + button at the bottom of the app
  • Type in a name you want to give your profile
  • Choose the option that says Location
  • Navigate on the map to the Location you want it to be activated at.
  • Hold down on the location until a flag icon appears on the map

TIME

Scenario 2: You know your mother is always late, and you don’t feel like sending her a message asking her why she is late and where she is.

Solution: Use Tasker and create a profile that is set for a specific time. Then create a task that sends a message when it is the time you have set in the profile.

How To:

  • Choose the Profile Tab
  • Press the + button at the bottom of the app
  • Type in a name you want to give your profile
  • Choose the option that says Time
  • Choose the time you want the message to be sent make sure both From and To have the same exact time.

Google Voice

If your like me then you don’t want everyone to have your cell phone number. In that case you can use Google Voice. However I must note that Google Voice only supports SMS so you can’t add attachments.

The easiest way to make Tasker send a message using Google Voice is to first set your Google Voice up to forward all text messages to your mobile number. Then request the person that you will be sending a message to, to send a message to your Google Voice number.

The number that the message was sent from will be the number you will send the message to. Then you will set tasker up the same way that you did above, but make sure to choose the SMS option and to not add an attachment.

Is It Sent?

You may want to be notified when tasker has sent the message. To do this you will add another action to your text message task that you made. To do this you will choose the task in the task tab, then click the + button then choose Alert. From here you can choose several types of alerts. I usually choose Beep and customize it to my liking. I then press the + button again and choose the Alert option again and choose Popup and customize the Popup message.
