My Field Computer Is A Raspberry Pi

Raspberry-Pi-3-top-down-webDon’t get me wrong I don’t see my Raspberry Pi 3 Model B ever replacing my laptop. However the Raspberry Pi has things I can use when out visitting clients to fix their tech issues.

In case your wandering what the hell a Raspberry Pi is? It is a development board, or more basically a single board computer the size of a credit card. I’m not joking it is 3.5 inches in size. But it is very handy for real world use.

Specs

Here are the specs for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.

  • A 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARMv8 CPU
  • 802.11n Wireless LAN
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

The Raspberry Pi 3 uses the same form factor as the Raspberry Pi 2. So it does have some of the same features. This is great because it allows for easy upgrading of hardware without having to worry about software issues. Below are the specs both the Pi 2 and Pi 3 have.

  • 1GB RAM
  • 4 USB ports
  • 40 GPIO pins
  • Full HDMI port
  • Ethernet port
  • Combined 3.5mm audio jack and composite video
  • Camera interface (CSI)
  • Display interface (DSI)
  • Micro SD card slot
  • VideoCore IV 3D graphics core

As you can see it is not extremely powerful but does have it’s advantages. I remember setting up a modem, and realizing my laptop didn’t have an eithernet port. Life became hell and embarrassing at that point. With the Raspberry Pi I can carry it in my pocket pull it out and set the modem up with style.

Now I will state that the Banana Pi M3 which I also own does have better specs but I wouldn’t make it my carry around device. For example the Banana Pi M3 has an octa core ARM CPU instead of a quad core. It also supports 802.11N WLAN just like the Raspberry Pi 3. But the Banana Pi has an antenna that sticks out of it. The Banana Pi only has 2 regular sized USB Ports where the Raspberry Pi has 4. However the Banana Pi does make up for the lack of USB ports by offering two additional Micro USB ports which I wish the Raspberry Pi had more of. The Banana Pi also has a SATA port and 2GB RAM instead of the 1GB RAM the Raspberry Pi has. Also the Banana Pi has built in Flash Memory where the Raspberry Pi doesn’t.

So you might ask why I prefer the Raspberry Pi for OTG projects, over the Banana Pi. Well simply put there are more situations I will need 4 regular sized USB ports and an Eithernet port on the go. I will almost always have my laptop with me which blows both devices out of the water. The Banana Pi’s external antenna gets in the way and is ugly as hell. Therese less bugs in the OS images made for Raspberry Pi then there is for the Banana Pi.
