Setup A DNS Server (Part 2)

Share This:

Now that we have successfully setup our DNS server we can do the easy part. Which is simply pointing our domain name over to the DNS Server. The way you do this all depends on the domain name registrar your using. If you don’t already have domain name here is list of some domain name registrars that you can use.

If you already own your domain name you will want to make some A records for your name servers. The following is a sample configuration for the name servers ns1.mydns-server.com and ns2.mydns-server.com
Type Value IP Address
A ns1 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
A ns2 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

The settings should be the same as the settings for your Zone file. If you forget what they where you can check them by typing the following on your server.

cat /var/named/mywebsite.com.db

So if you Zone file says the IP Address for ns1 is 192.168.1.61 then XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX will be 192.168.1.61 the same goes for ns2.
